My First Project

I think most crafty people can remember their first project. Not necessarily the first one they ever did—in which case I'm sure mine would be some awful preschool monstrosity made out of macaroni and glue—but the first one in a medium that made you say, "Ah! I think I'll keep doing this." I remember mine, in any case. I happened across it while I was picking out a necklace to wear a couple of days ago and thought I'd share it here.

The whole thing:

The dyed coral caught my eye while I was killing time at work. "Those would work great together," I thought time and time again. At long last I overcame my initial shyness and reticence at dipping my toe into the bead pool and took them home with me.

It's been a few years since this piece, but I still hold a place for it in my heart. I also think it's really neat just as a piece of jewelry, and I still wear it when I can. Even if looking at the bits near the crimp beads makes me cringe.

WIP: Blueberry Pi Scarf

Pi is the go-to irrational number, it seems. Every new idea I get for a project, I use pi first. This one is a scarf I started working on after I found my Lily Mills frame loom, a gift I got when I was much smaller than I am now.

This is the first time I've really devoted a lot of time to weaving since the cardboard looms we used in fifth grade, so bear with me, please!

I also like to have entertainment on while I work: movie, music, television shows, whatever. Yesterday while I was working on this scarf, I rocked out to this:

I've dug Galactic since I was in middle school. They're a funk/blues/rock/hiphop/just about anything fusion band, a testimony to their NOLA roots. It's the perfect stuff to keep you stoked and into what you're doing.
